  • Marriage, should I say, I do or I don

Marriage, should I say, I do or I don’t? Watch our Rock Videos and listen to Wedding Bells song, you can even download it for FREE!

One of my best friends got engaged last week. This is a groundbreaking moment in my life to date. The same idiotic person who I have done some of my most stupid pranks with, has got down on one knee and proposed to the girl he loves. It shows how far we have come, from teenagers, early twenty something’s and now at last, officially adults.

There was a time when I could not imagine doing such a thing. I have felt 18 ever since I was 18 (7 years) but this revelation really struck a chord. As I am approaching 26 the responsibilities of marriage - financial, emotional, the commitment and the lifestyle always seemed far beyond anything I would or could ever consider.

However, now I would certainly consider it - perhaps even enjoy it, a new challenge perhaps. Who wants to spend the rest of their life propping up the bar is some average nightclub trying to pick up girls. The whole process really can be rather tedious and if you are no Brad Pitt and normally inebriated by the time you get to said club, the chances are minimal!

So as weddings are now officially on the horizon, it is time to start thinking about this new chapter in life and acting the part accordingly. It will almost be a welcome relief as there are some elements of the young and single lifestyle that cannot be and should not be maintained for ever. And if you do then there would be no chance of getting married, no one will want to marry a fat drunk with limited prospects. Yes it is certainly time to grow up and I thank my best friend for making me realize that!

  • Do you think means testing is fair?

Do you think means testing is fair? Watch our Rock Videos and listen to Hello Mother song, you can even download it for FREE!

There has been slow progress with social care reform. The government did promise at one point to radically rethink long term care for the elderly - this can now be viewed with some skepticism. Reforming the controversial funding system of social care is being looked at by labour but it has come to nothing, being deemed too expensive (even though they managed it inScotland). Insiders say that the government has now finally accepted that the current system is unsustainable. The problem is that the population is ageing and disabled people and older people live longer lives, therefore help for their day to day lives is rocketing. This burden seems to be falling on families rather than the government due to restrictions from local authorities on who qualifies for help. With the cost of care being so high or so poor quite often spouses have to give up their jobs to care for their elderly loved ones.

One of the key things that need to be addressed is the financial cut off that dictates anyone with assets worth £21k or over or with a home get no help at all. This form of means testing needs to be reexamined. Other problems that need to be addressed include how careers are supported in particular the ones who wish to remain in work. And also the supply of respite care so they can have a break needs to be looked into. Another question is if everyone should be entitled to help, as happens in Scotland. Some form of ‘progressive universalism’ is preferred by ministers but God knows what they mean by that phrase - perhaps it means only universal entitlement to advice on where to find care or how to do it.

However, the financial contribution made by the state or the individual is the most contentious issue with most campaigners thinking the government should increase direct funding from the £1.5 billion it currently stands at. I am sure there will be no quick decisions, but Alistair Darling, the chancellor, has made it clear that means testing is here to stay, however unpopular it may be.

  • Not convinced about your doctors diagnosis and want a second opinion in seconds?

Not convinced about your doctors diagnosis and want a second opinion in seconds? Watch our Rock Videos and listen to Blot on the Radar song, you can even download it for FREE!

It is amazing the impact that the Internet has had in the world of health. Years ago people had very little medical knowledge themselves and used to have to go to the doctor to find out what was wrong with them. Or there were great big encyclopedias (if they had access to them), where they could read up about their particular condition. But now people are so much more tuned in to their own bodies themselves and their minds are much more open to alternative medicines and other non traditional routes. The one big difference though, is obviously the arrival of the Internet where you can find out everything you need to know at the touch of a button. Simply log on, go to Google, tap in the problem and a wealth of knowledge is available at your fingertips in seconds. For people used to more traditional ways of finding these things out, this is a phenomenon.

No longer do you have to rely on a GP whose sometime shaky analysis can stem from being a jack of all trades and a master of none. You used to go to a Doctor and he would say you have this or that, in a ten minute slot he would have to have an analysis of what the problem was. You always took the doctors word for it. Now, if you are not too convinced that some doctor who does not speak a world of English has the right diagnosis you can go online and check for yourself. With declining standards in the NHS this is a very important development.

People were generally much more ignorant as to what was going on with their bodies and would take his or her word for it. Now from the comfort of your own home you can educate yourself with accurate medical information on absolutely everything - there are forums where you can converse and swap solutions with someone at opposite ends of the world from you.
